The
core of Funambol is a scalable data sync (DS) platform that performs
mobile cloud sync and push email. The software is based on the Open
Mobile Alliance (OMA) DS protocol, commonly known as SyncML. SyncML
is built into more than one billion mobile phones, enabling Funambol
to sync contacts, calendars, tasks and notes with these devices. Funambol
also provides an open source device management (DM) framework, based
on the OMA DM standard. It enables the rapid creation and deployment
of DM applications for over-the-air (OTA) provisioning, configuration
and management of mobile devices.
The primary value that open source provides is broad device compatibility.
There are four billion cell phones consisting of 1,500+ models. These
phones work differently depending on the mobile network and location,
which makes it difficult to develop a mass market mobile service due
to operational differences. Funambol's global open source developer
community downloads Funambol software and uses it on different phones
around the world. If there are issues, as they have access to the
code, they can make the software work contribute the code and knowledge
back to the community. This open source approach enables Funambol
to support many more devices than proprietary alternatives.
Funambol's push email functionality includes all standard mobile email
functionality. It includes an integrated contacts list that eliminates
the need to type email addresses. It supports attachments on smartphones
such as Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. Funambol provides an AJAX-based
web portal that automates over-the-air (OTA) handset configuration
and email client download that makes it easy to setup and use email
on billions of mobile handsets.
