Epocrates'
launch of its application for the iPhone platform was the
most successful in the company's recent history, with tens of thousands
of new users in days and more than 10,000 new physician users in
the first week. In just nine months since the app launch, more than
75,000 U.S. physicians have adopted the popular reference guide
on their iPhones and iPod touch devices to help reduce medical
errors, improve patient care and practice safer medicine.
The
innovative iPhone OS platform allowed Epocrates to add new graphically-rich
features to its applications, specifically, the Pill Picture and
Pill Identification tools. With this enhanced functionality, clinicians
can show their patients pictures of a newly prescribed drug, or
identify a patient's existing medication with a physical description
(e.g., round, blue and scored) when the name cannot be recalled.
Additionally,
the premium Epocrates® Essentials suite leverages the iPhone's
touch-screen interface to feature important drug, disease and diagnostic
information that helps support a patient's consultation at the point-of-care
from diagnosis to treatment. With this premium application, healthcare
professionals can instantly access the following information at
the touch of a finger:
- Drug
prescribing and safety information for more than 3,300 drugs,
including pill pictures
- Peer-reviewed
disease content co-developed with the BMJ Group, publisher of
the British Medical Journal, featuring evidenced-based treatment
options and full-color disease images
-
Infectious disease treatment guide with empiric and specific treatment
recommendations
- Hundreds
of diagnostic and laboratory tests for interpretation and diagnostic
support
- 600+
alternative (herbal) medications with drug interactions
- MedMath
medical calculators including commonly-used pregnancy wheel and
unit conversions
