| NB Power,
which operates one of North America's most diverse generation and
interconnected transmission systems, has found the ideal foil to its
environment - Xplore's rugged Tablet PC.
With
Xplore's iX104, NB Power is able to efficiently deliver power to
its more than 360,000 direct and indirect customers by facilitating
the delivery of data from its workforce in the field.
Challenge:
According
to Doug Monaghan, "We were looking for equipment that would
allow for the mobilization of our engineering workforce. We were
undertaking an initiative to streamline our engineering processes
that would reduce repetitive tasks, enabling a reduction in required
resources to do engineering detailing."
"We
also created a GIS database to map NB Power facilities and customer
information. We wanted to be able to generate job packages, estimates
and GIS updates in the field that could be loaded to a server for
immediate processing."
Solution:
Monaghan
said the Xplore Tablets have been a hit with its employees, primarily
because there is nothing on the marketplace that offers such a robust
and reliable solution.
"The
environmental conditions that exist here in the Maritimes and our
operating requirements limit the availability of equipment on the
market that will accommodate these conditions," he said.
Monaghan
has been very impressed by Xplore's responsiveness both from a customer
support standpoint and with technological enhancements.
"As
with any deployment to the field there are issues that arise which
need to be address in a timely manner," he said. "Xplore's
field engineers have been very supportive and worked with us to
overcome these issues, allowing us to move forward with our deployment
scheduled. In addition, the AllvueTM screen gives it more flexibility
as a Tablet that is to be used in an outdoor environment."
Result:
The
benefits have also trickled down to the bottom line. "We have
been able to quantify the results of our deployment, which has greatly
reduced the time required to create a job package," Monaghan
said. He believes the sky is the limit in terms of what Xplore offers
NB Power.
"In
the next phase of deployment with the transmission group, it may
be suited to an Xplore Tablet as it will require very versatile
docking solutions and the Tablet may be required to be used as a
stand-alone piece of equipment."
