Before St. Luke's housekeeping and other staff used mobile devices, the process to admit new patients entailed calling around to floor managers and secretaries to see if a bed was available. When an open bed was identified, the cleaning staff was paged to prepare the room for a new patient. The cleaning staff then called the floor staff to alert them that an open room was available. This process was tedious for the staff members and inefficient—delaying room turnover and patient care.

St. Luke's decided to deploy PDAs with built-in Wi-Fi and MediLogistics BedCentral software to its staff. The application alerted the housekeeping staff on their PDAs when a room was ready for cleaning and enabled staff members to check on the status of any room. During the pilot deployment, however, St. Luke's discovered users lost their connection and dropped application sessions when they went from one wireless virtual LAN to the next. Users had to manually reset the device, re-authenticate to a different access point and re-boot their applications. St. Luke's turned to NetMotion Wireless to help solve these challenges.

St. Luke’s deployed NetMotion's Mobility XE mobile VPN software and saw immediate results. With Mobility XE, users could maintain their application sessions as they traveled throughout the building—eliminating the need to re-authenticate their device and re-boot applications as they roamed in and out of Wi-Fi and wireless LAN access points. Workers could also turn their handhelds on and off to conserve battery life and resume applications exactly where they left off. Additionally, Mobility XE integrated two-factor authentication and data encryption to protect sensitive patient information and transmission to and from mobile devices.

In less than 3 months of deploying Mobility XE, St. Luke's increased ICU bed availability by 400-percent and recognized a complete return on their investment. They were also able to reduce environmental services staffing by 24 percent, increase ICU occupancy by 150 percent and increase patient satisfaction scores.
