With
its 480,000 passengers per day, the La Defense station is one of
the largest transportation hubs in Europe. Paris Subway (RATP) employees
need to instantly access up-to date information to increase their
efficiency on-site.
Since
2004, hundreds of RATP employees have been equipped with Wi-Fi-enabled
PDAs. Using the Cisco-based Wi-Fi network and the Appear IQ wireless
communication platform, the employee is automatically recognized
upon entering a hotspot and receives direct access to personalized
information related to his job function, location and time of the
day: context-aware services.
The
Appear Context Engine turns a Wi-Fi hotspot into an intelligent
working environment: the Workspot. Itinerary planning, traffic disruptions,
timetables, real-time traffic information and other location-based
information are automatically pushed onto the employee's PDA depending
on his exact needs.
Similarly,
security employees are able to access real-time video-feeds and
send silent geo-localized alerts via Wi-Fi, whereas field maintenance
workers can receive updated task-lists and detailed equipment diagrams
on their PDAs.
"This
installation of advanced Wi-Fi services in a subway station is unprecedented",
explained Philippe Vappereau, managing the Traveler Information
System Department. "Our initial goal was to help our employees
provide better answers to the customers' requests in order to improve
quality of service along their journey. Now, RATP employees can
easily access proximity services to provide real-time traffic information
and local information frequently asked by travelers. Innovative
transport companies like RATP intend to develop innovative services
that will improve the passengers overall experience."
Appear
IQ is now being gradually deployed through out the Paris subway
and bus networks.
