With one million passengers per day, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Rail) has 10,000 mobile workers. In 2005 NS implemented the Appear IQ software platform in Europe's largest-known mobile deployment.

NS needed a context-aware wireless solution that could overcome the problems of their previous solution.

- 10,000 users required a robust and scaleable solution.
- Problems with low bandwidth needed to be overcome.
- Mechanical wear out of the card readers degraded the sync quality.
- Low IT skills of frontline workers meant a user-friendly system was essential.
- The solution needed to run 24*7 with very limited downtime.

The Solution
A Cisco end-to-end WLAN infrastructure provides high-speed connectivity in 50 train stations. The NS Desktop, using the Appear Context Engine and Synchronisation Module, enables the push and synchronisation of personalised real-time information to handheld devices whenever the user enters of moves from an authorised wireless zone or "workspot" depending on context.

The Results
Return on investment achieved in 5 months and savings estimated at €8 million/year. Each mobile employee is saving 20-25 minutes/day as the complicated synchronisation process occurs automatically. Only information that is relevant to a particular zone or employee is downloaded or uploaded saving employees having to sift through or synchronise information that is not of interest to them. Information access and the synchronisation of the mobile devices and the back-office occur in seconds. Train drivers are now receiving critical information such as temporary speed limits prior to boarding the train.
