Challenge
Having
pledged to increase customer satisfaction at the Stockholm Subway,
MTR Stockholm has to ensure better punctuality, fewer cancelled
departures and a cleaner rail system. A key success factor to achieving
these goals is to provide better information to frontline staff
in real time, using advanced mobile technology so that they have
the right knowledge at the right time and place to execute their
tasks.

|
With
just under 6 months, Appear designed a solution to meet the needs
of MTR Stockholm's frontline staff based on the Appear IQ platform.
Mobile workers are equipped with the Microsoft windows mobile©
ruggedized PDA which has been uploaded with the Appear middleware
solution. The middleware accesses the active directory which validates
the users' authentication and permits him/ her to gain access into
the system. Following that the user gains access to various other
backend systems such as the `SL disturbance´ which monitors
traffic disturbance and `Dedu´ where the defect reports are
stored. The data collated through these systems provide mobile workers
with the right information to execute their tasks. This information
is than intelligently filtered to provide only what is relevant
to the worker and transmitted over 3G networks to the handheld devices.
Return
on Investment
The
applications designed by Appear have revolutionized the work style
of subway operators. Previously all tasking and reporting were done
manually on paper. Now with just a click on their PDAs, mobile workers
can easily do their reports, assign tasks and carry out an array
of activities through the various applications available to them
on their PDA as shown in figure 1. This saves time by 25 % eliminating
repeated reporting and filing of reports only when a workers shift
ends. Workers would be able to instantly fix the defects as the
information is available to everyone once one of them makes a report
on their PDA.
Additionally,
mobile workers have greater situational awareness of what is happening
around them with up to date info on traffic disturbances. Faster
response time to break downs and other operational disruptions is
achieved through this ensuring smoother operations of the subway.
Empowered with such a high tech solution, there is no doubt that
Appear has enabled MTR Stockholm workers to achieve a higher level
of efficiency and provide a greater level of customer service enabling
it to deliver on its pledge.
