Kista
Science City, together with the shopping mall Kista Galeria, is
being transformed into a wireless "hotspot" that demonstratres
and promotes the latest in mobile applications, technologies and
services. With a focus on technology, over 700 companies, 27,000
employees and 1 million visitors/year to one of Northern Europe's
fastest growing shopping centres, Kista is Sweden's wireless valley.
With
the goal to enhance the visitor experience and improve employee
productivity, a wireless context-aware solution was created allowing
access to relevant information based on a person's location within
the city.
The
Appear Context Engine, using a Cisco based wireless infrastructure
with 110 access points, recognises a user's location and dynamically
updates his/her handheld device with personalized information upon
entering various Wi-Fi enabled zones located throughout Kista, achieving
an indoor location accuracy to within 5m. For example, as the user
approaches the bank, stock quotes appear on his mobile device. Walking
by the lunch court triggers a list of menus available from nearby
restaurants. Upon entering the subway station an updated timetable
becomes available.
Employees
such as maintenance workers in the shopping mall have the possibility
to receive specific task notifications, whilst retailers can receive
sales information. An important application is the security alert
that can instantly inform employees of theft or potential dangers
to the public.
The
Results
The business value of the solution is realised with increased operational
efficiency and employee productivity, improved security, and an
enhanced visitor experience, particulary in the shopping mall.
