Toshiba’s Digital Products Division has updated its Excite tablet lineup with the Excite 10 SE, a somewhat cheaper version of its 10.1-inch Excite 10 Android tablet.  The Excite 10 SE will retail for $330, compared to the original Excite 10’s $400 price tag.

Although SE stands for “Special Edition,” there is nothing very special or exciting about the tablet’s specs.  Toshiba says it has an “HD” touchscreen, but doesn’t mention screen resolution, so we aren’t expecting any better than the Exite 10’s middling 1280×800 resolution. On the plus side, the Excite SE still comes with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and is filled with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) goodness.

Toshiba Excite 10 SE backOn the outside, the Excite 10 SE is encased with a “textured Fusion Lattice” finish that promises to make it easier to grip. The tablet has stereo speakers with “SRS Premium Voice Pro,” and a 3 megapixel rear-facing HD camera (compared to the original Exite 10’s five-megapixel shooter) with auto-focus and digital zoom, plus Micro SD and Micro USB ports.  And though Toshiba doesn’t mention it in its announcement, we’ll also presume that the 10 SE comes with Corning Gorilla Glass as previous Excite models do.

The tablet measures 0.4 inches (1 cm) thick and weighs 1.4 lbs. (640.7 grams) — just a tad thicker than the new iPad and Google’s Nexus 10 — and about the same weight.

Toshiba says it will sell the Excite 10 SE 16GB model for $350, but hasn’t revealed if there is a 32GB model as well.  The company said it would make the SE available at select retailers and at ToshibaDirect.com starting December 6, but as of this writing (December 7), the tablet isn’t yet listed on Toshiba’s store.  We’ll check back again and let you know when it’s added.
UPDATE:  The SE is now available for $330 right here.
