Consumer mobile software roundup: July - August 2009

Below are new product releases and updates through August 13, 2009. Prices quoted are in US dollars.

Android

DataViz announced the availability of their mobile Office suite application, Documents To Go, on the Android Marketplace store. Users can view, edit and create Microsoft Word files, including Word 2007, and se a desktop application to provide two-way file synchronization. A version with support for attachments is also available for Microsoft Exchange e-mail users who need to send, receive and edit attachments on their iPhones. The trial edition of Documents To Go is free, and the premium features edition is priced at under $30.

BlackBerry

e-Mobile Software has updated its eMobile Weather app to v 3.3. The app automatically updates the forecast for local or favorite locations every 30 minutes. eMobile Weather works with Blackberry OS 4.2.0 and up, including Bold, Pearl, 8800, 8300, Curve, and Storm phones. eMobile Weather is available at Handango for $15.95.

Besides weather forecasts, the company also offers management tools for tasks, calls, email, stocks, and more.

ShoZu has launched its ShoZu social media app that lets BlackBerry users update multiple sites simultaneously and receive updates from others. The client offers status updates, photo uploads, blogging, tagging, video sharing, and responses to comments in one central location. ShoZu currently works on Curves, Pearls, and Bolds, with Storm and Tour support coming soon. ShoZu is available from BlackBerry App World for $4.99, and a free trial is available.

iPhone / iPod Touch

Electric Pocket has added an iPhone version of its PhoneFace photo speed-dial app, already available for BlackBerry and Android users. PhoneFace users can select any photo or avatar for their contacts, take a photo with the iPhone's camera, or let the app automatically locate and update the pictures of contacts with their most recent Twitter profile picture. PhoneFace will launch phone calls, text messages and emails with a simple click on a contact's photo or avatar. PhoneFace is available from the iTunes App Store for an introductory price of 99 cents.

Fonix has unveiled its iSpeak 1.4 voice control / dialing app for original iPhone and iPhone 3G handsets. iSpeak lets users speak the phone number or name of a person in the address book, followed by a location, to dial the contact by voice. Like other recent voice dialing systems, iSpeak 1.4 doesn't work over Bluetooth, but once the call dials, you can transfer it to a Bluetooth headset for the conversation. Fonix iSpeak 1.4 is available from Apple's App Store for $2.99.

Mitek Systems announced its Mobile Receipt application, which converts the photo of a receipt taken with the iPhone camera into a high quality image and, with one tap, converts the data into an expense report. Mobile Receipt is available for $4.99 from the App Store on iPhone or at itunes, or at miteksystems.com.

PhatWare has released WritePad Professional Edition, a combination of its WritePad Affairs, Events, and Notes apps that were launched back in May. WritePad now supports Voice Notes, allows multiple folders of each kind, and uses new OS 3.0 features. It also allows users to transfer individual items between several iPhone devices via Wi-Fi, and Affairs now has a reminder feature implemented using the PhatWare provider server. WritePad Professional Edition is available on Apple iTunes for $9.99.
