Consumer mobile software roundup: May - June 2009

Below are new product releases and updates through June 12, 2009. Prices quoted are in US dollars.

Multi-Platform

Kaspersky Lab announced version 8.0 of Kaspersky Mobile Security, its antivirus and spam-SMS-blocking software that also prevents data leakage when a phone is stolen. Version 8.0 adds an encrypted folder, parental controls, GPS to track the phone if stolen, and an improved SIM Watch feature that allows users to remotely block communications and delete data stored on their mobile device even if a new SIM card has been installed. Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 is subscription-based and can be downloaded at kaspersky.com for $29.95 per license.

Momail mobile email has added Twitter support, allowing Momail users to post Twitter "tweets" and photos with just a Momail email, rather than having to logon to Twitter or download or install special mobile software. Momail also works with Facebook, Flick, and Mobile VoIP telephony provider Jajah. The app works on all mobiles with built-in support for email. Privus Mobile has launched a real time caller ID service that offers all details of callers that are not on a user's contact list. Privus claims its service identifies the caller on nearly 85 percent of cell phone-to-cell phone calls. The app can also store complete caller details in the user's phonebook. Privus Mobile is offered through the App Store on Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Android devices via Handango, the BlackBerry Store and Blackberry App World.

Unbound Medicine has updated its Harrison's Manual of Medicine for Mobile + Web, which supports iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, at Handango and Palm mobile devices. For more details, see unboundmedicine.com.

Android

Big in Japan has updated ShopSavvy, its personal shopping assistant app. ShopSavvy enables customers to comparison shop by scanning any product's barcode using their Android phone's built-in camera. ShopSavvy then searches and displays the lowest prices online as well as at nearby brick-and-mortar retailers, and also looks up product reviews. The new version 3.5.0, includes more than 1,000 new retailers and 750,000 new products, as well as faster scanning and load times. BlackBerry

Kaplan Publishing released its best-selling GRE Exam Vocabulary Flashcards and Medical Terms for Nurses applications on BlackBerry. The GRE app helps prospective grad students augment their vocabulary for the verbal portion of the Graduate Record Exam. The Medical Terms app aims to help nursing students learn terms needed for both the workplace and licensure exams. GRE Exam can be downloaded at Handango for $4.99, and Medical Terms is available for at Handango for $9.99. Both apps are also available for the same price at BlackBerry App World.

Technicopia released a BlackBerry version of its "gwabbit" contact grabber app, which automatically searches and identifies contacts embedded in your BlackBerry emails, and adds or updates that information to your BlackBerry Contacts, in one click. For syncing contacts to Outlook, gwabbit's automated capture keeps contacts updated globally. The desktop version, gwabbit for Outlook, similarly identifies signatures in incoming emails and creates them as new or updated contacts on your desktop. Gwabbit for BlackBerry costs $9.99 annually on BlackBerry App World (blackberry.com/appworld), and at gwabbit.com. Gwabbit for Outlook is available for a single, one-time fee of $19.95 at gwabbit.com.

iPhone / iPod Touch

GeoSentric's GyPSii, a free mobile social network app available in English and Chinese, has been added to Apple's App store. GyPSii lets users create and share "geotagged" content in real time, and users can automatically update and share their status, newly created places and friends in real time across other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. GyPSii is also available on phones from LG, Nokia, RIM, and Samsung. GyPSii can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and directly at gypsii.com.

SplashData's SplashPhoto and SplashNotes applications are now available for iPhone and iPod touch. SplashPhoto is a mobile photo album manager that can connect with Flickr and Picasa, and SplashNotes is a note-taking and outlining application. Both offer wireless synchronization with Windows and Mac OS X desktop applications that are available separately. SplashPhoto and SplashNotes are available for $4.99 each from Apple's App Store. The free SplashPhoto Desktop app and the $9.95 desktop version of SplashNotes are available at splashdata.com.

Truphone released Truphone 3.0, the latest version of its VoIP app for the Apple iPhone. Truphone features an integrated messaging tool that unifies all IM communities from a single page within the application. IM services currently supported include Skype, MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. Truphone 3.0 is available at truphone.com.
