(For iPhone, BlackBerry, & Palm apps see Page 1)

Symbian S60

Augmentra has released a new version of its ViewRanger Europe off-road GPS software for S60 mobiles, including the Nokia 5800 touch screen phone. ViewRanger offers access to detailed topographic maps across Europe along with points-of-interest and leisure route guides. The latest version adds extensions to ViewRanger's BuddyBeacon tracking capability, and also lets users track and navigate to their dogs via BuddyBeacon support for Retrieva's upcoming GPS-enabled dog collar. Compatibility with the phone's Landmark database has also been added, so the same Landmarks can be used in both ViewRanger and road mapping such as Nokia Maps. ViewRanger is available at viewranger.com.

Quickoffice has upgraded Quickoffice Premier Office 2007 document editor to version 6.0. The latest upgrade lets users view and recalculate column and line charts in Microsoft Excel 2007, count words in Word documents, and record audio notes in PowerPoint. The new suite also works with password-protected Word and Excel files, and can open .zip files. The suite is available at a 20 percent introductory discount for $39 at quickoffice.com.

Spb Software's popular Spb Brain Evolution game -- already available for Windows Mobile -- is now available now for S60 smartphone users. Spb Brain Evolution comes as an intellectual game meant to offer users ways of improving their memory, logic or arithmetic, as well as their puzzle-solving skills. The software consists of 10 mini-games (Arithmetics, Balltracker, Encyclopedia, Guess Who, Matches, Memorics, Minesweeper, Numbers, Quadronica, and Sudoku), all of which need to be played in a given sequence. Finishing a game with good results will guarantee that the next one is unlocked. The game suite can memorize statistics and progress reports, along with profiles for multiple players. Spb Brain Evolution for Symbian can be used with Symbian 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, and 9.5, and supports different screen resolutions. It sells for $14.95 at Handango. A 15-day trial is also available.

StyleTap has released a preview Symbian version of its StyleTap Palm app emulation software. StyleTap allows over 30,000 existing Palm OS applications to run on current and future Symbian S60, Symbian UIQ, and Windows Mobile phones. The Symbian version adds a display scaling feature that allows applications to run in "hi-resolution" (320x320) mode, with the screen scaled to the actual display size. StyleTap can be downloaded at styletap.com for $49.95. A 14-day trial is also available.

SymbianGuru has updated Phone Guardian anti-theft app to version 2.0. New features include a GPS Track option, which lets users find out the exact GPS location of their phone as well as receive the Cell ID info, IMEI and IMSI. If privacy is a concern, users can install the software without an icon, and launch it by dialling a secret number. The alarm SMS can now be sent to three numbers: two alarm SMS numbers entered in the application and the third the number from which the locked SMS was sent. Phone Guardian is available for $13.99 at Handango.

SymbianGuru also recently updated GPS-Action alarm setting app, which lets users preset reminder alarms or tasks upon arrival at a location. GPS-Action sells for $9.99 at Handango.

Windows Mobile

Microsoft has a preview of its new Recite voice note app. To start recording a remembrance, users just press the 'Remember' button, then say what they want to record, and press 'Finished' to complete the recording and store it. The app also allows for searches, which are ordered by match score. The app is available at http://recite.microsoft.com/Pages/index.aspx.
