Consumer mobile software roundup: August - Sept. 2008

Multi-Plaform

Astraware's Platypus game for Windows Mobile now also supports BlackBerry, Symbian S60 and UIQ. The object is to pilot your Platypus aircraft and save Mungola from an invasion by neighboring Collosatropolis. To buy Platypus, see astraware.com.

Momail is now offering JAJAH's voice-over Internet service for mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-landline calls. To activate the service, a Momail user registers their JAJAH account under "On Demand" on the Momail site, then emails jajah@momail.com on their phone, with the number of the callee in the subject line. Visenza has released a synchronization service that lets smartphone users instantly synchronize e-mail, appointments, contacts, notes and tasks wirelessly between their phone and PC. Visenza is available for all smartphones including BlackBerry, iPhone and Windows Mobile. The service starts at $24.95 per month per user, and can be purchased at visenza.com.

Visto has released Visto Mobile 6, which lets users connect with friends and family in real time using push e-mail, social networking, SMS, IM and photo sharing. The application's address book combines contacts from multiple sources, including social networks, into a single user interface. The software update also lets users filter updates from their list of contacts. Visto Mobile 6 is available at visto.com. BlackBerry

Concrete Software has announced Aces Mahjong -- the Chinese tile game -- and also Civilization IV: War of Two Cities, both for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. Civilization IV takes classic aspects of Civilization and pulls them into a new game, allowing players to engage in world domination via their phone. Using technology development, army building and combat, players expand an empire while progressing from the birth of civilization to modern times. Civilization IV sells for $13.49 at Handango, and Aces Mahjong sells for $8.99 at Handango. iambic's Agendus information manager, of which there are versions for Palm and Windows Mobile, is finally available for BlackBerry. Agendus offers a daily overview that includes Meetings, Tasks, recent messages and calls, weather, and Quote of the Day. Users can also see views for a week or a month, and view Tasks and Contact information. Agendus sells for $17.95 at Handango.

reQall released a beta version of its memory aid for BlackBerry users. reQall for BlackBerry enables users to create, edit and share reminders, simply by saying or texting what they want to remember straight to their BlackBerry. reQall converts voice messages into text, sorts the messages into To-Dos, Notes and Shopping List items, and delivers reminders to the user at the right moment. S4BB has released TaskMailer, which lets users create and email a "to do" task. Task preferences can be entered by name, priority, status, due date, category, and notes. TaskMailer is $9.99 from s4bb.com. S4BB also offers TaskMaster, a task management app that synchronizes with Outlook, Lotus Notes, Act!, Novell Groupwise, iCal, Entourage, and more. SBSH's Safewallet Pro is now available for BlackBerry. Safewallet uses 256-bit AES encryption to store PIN numbers, credit card and bank account numbers, and registration information. The software will auto-close if the user forgets to close it. Safewallet Pro, which includes a desktop companion, sells for $22.45 at Handango.

Palm OS

iambic has added Palm OS support to version 3.0 of its Windows Mobile app, Health & Diet Manager, which provides resourcess for making meal choices and exercise choices. Version 3.0.1 is also priced at $17.95 at Handango. The Windows desktop version, which allows complete data synchronization with Palm as well as Windows Mobile clients, is bundled with the Palm version for $26.95 at Handango.

Megasoft2000 has updated its Billiards game, which boasts a "realistic recreation" and a "super smart" interface for playing against the computer. This new version has a new interface and animation graphics engine. Billiards sells for $17.95 at Handango. A discount pack, which includes both Billiards and MegaBowling is $24.43 at Handango. Resco has updated its discounted Palm OS application bundle, Resco Suite, which includes Resco Explorer, Viewer, Backup, IDGuard, Neeews, and its Sudoku game. Resco Suite v2.01 for Palm OS is available now with a free trial. The full bundle sells for $53.96, at Handango, a discount of over 50% off the individual purchase prices.
