-- (MobileVillage) -- Below is a roundup of recently announced
mobile field service products.
MobileDataforce
has integrated DeLorme's XMap/GIS GIS mapping and field service
development environment into its PointSync mobile application
development kit. DeLorme's XMap offers access to existing GIS
data, importing and exporting of ESRI Shapefiles, data creating
and editing tools, and Web publishing of GIS data.
With the
integration, users can load their day's job locations in XMap,
click on the visual location flags, and see the relevant work
order for that site in MobileDataforces PointSync. As the
user updates jobs in PointSync, the location flags are changed
to give a quick visual indicator of progress.

The Geospatial
Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced
recipients of its 2006 GITA Innovator Awards. The awards recognize
the unique and significant contributions of organizations that
have used geospatial technology in the innovative development
of a technology, service, or application. The awards were presented
during GITA's Annual Conference, held April 23-26, 2006 in Tampa,
Florida.
One of the
award recipients was the utility company PSE&G. In
2005, the Gas Asset Management department of PSE&G designed,
built, and deployed a gas facility GIS solution to address existing
gaps in facility information availability, asset management planning,
and maintenance functions within the organization. The project
strategy was to limit customization of the core GIS software and
manually digitize only the critical records to minimize conversion
costs.
The deliverable
of a gas GIS with associated customer, leak, damage, and cathodic
protection data was met, including everything from the maintenance
interface to the work management system.
To meet the
deliverable and timeline, the project team correlated the digitized
wall map data -- gas mains, valves, and regulators -- with the
supporting and related tabular information using geospatial data
processing and proximity-driven automated and semiautomated
conversion tools. To do this, the team established and documented
the connectivity rules and attribute-driven relationships between
digitized and geocoded features and then created the custom routines
to push data attributes and snap connected objects.
Another award
recipient, Florida Power and Light Company, implemented
its first GIS 19 years ago. Through the years, they have continued
to evolve with the technology, and their GIS is now an enterprise-wide
application that supplies land, asset, and network information
for all subscribing business processes and applications.
By creating
a single system of record for this information and a daily process
for disseminating updates, they have eliminated inefficiencies
in the data maintenance process and improved the timeliness and
accuracy of this data.
