PSC, Symbol announce new Bluetooth retail scanners

- Gary Thayer, editor

Jan. 17, 2006 -- (MobileVillage) -- At the National Retail Federation show this week, at least two companies -- PSC Inc. and Symbol Technologies -- announced new handheld wireless scanners.

PSC announced the availability of the QuickScan QS6500BT, a handheld scanner that features linear imaging technology as well as Bluetooth v 1.2 wireless technology. The QS6500BT reads bar codes at 450 scans per second. The QS6500BT reads 1D bar codes and most stacked 2D codes like PDF-417 and Micro PDF. The charging-base station allows the product to scan bar codes while its lithium ion battery is charging.

The QS6500BT is available at psc.com.

Symbol added the LS4278 Bluetooth cordless bar code scanner, which offers remote management capabilities including discovery of scanning assets and their associated information such as serial number, date of manufacture and firmware version for remote retrieval over a network.

The LS4278 also provides the ability to automate the configuration process, by enabling customers to monitor their scanners and remotely upgrade firmware to support new features.

Symbol also previewed its MC9097 mobile computer, which is the first rugged mobile computer certified to operate on the Sprint-Nextel network. Symbol's MC9097 mobile computer provides field service and sales workers access to Nextel walkie-talkie service, wireless voice and data services and two-way messaging. The MC9097 also features GPS capabilities, voice and data convergence and multi-mode wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The LS4278 cordless scanners are available now at symbol.com. Symbol's rugged MC9097 mobile computer will be available for sale in the United States in March 2006.
