Fujitsu, NEC each release new notebooks

- Gary Thayer, News Editor

June 21, 2005 -- (MobileVillage) -- Fujitsu and NEC each announced new notebook computers today. Fujitsu Computer Systems announced the LifeBook N6200, a 17-inch desktop replacement notebook, while NEC has launched 12 new laptop models (currently in Japan only) that use Atheros' dual-band 802.11a/g WLAN chips with extended range (XR) capability.

The new NEC VersaPro Mobile Note or All in One Note business laptops offer WLAN connectivity based on a built-in 802.11a/g miniPCI adapter using Atheros technology. The notebooks also support Atheros' Super AG feature set, which according to Atheros, employs packet bursting, fast frames, and data compression to increase the throughput and range of wireless networking products. Using dual-band 802.11a/g technology, the laptops enable mobile users to wirelessly connect to any 802.11b, 802.11g or 802.11a/g access point. The NEC VersaPro Mobile Note series also integrates security software and a finger print authentication sensor.

The new NEC VersaPro series of notebook PCs are currently only available in Japan. The 12 models with Atheros XR and Super AG support include the VersaPro Mobile Note: VY17F/LV-U, VY17F/LX-U, VY13M/LX-U, VJ17F/LV-U, VJ17F/LX-U and VJ13M/LX-U; and All in One Note: VY18F/RF-U, VY17F/RF-U, VY13M/RF-U, VJ18F/RF-U, VJ17F/RF-U and VJ13M/RF-U.

Fujitsu's LifeBook N6200 desktop replacement notebook features Intel's second generation (Sonoma) Centrino mobile chipset including a Pentium M Processor. It has a 17-inch WXGA + TFT LCD display that Fujitsu claims is 40% brighter than a standard TFT screen. For acoustics, the N6200 also has built-in stereo speakers equipped with Fujitsu-engineered subwoofer, and 3D audio with Dolby headphone support.

The LifeBook N6200 comes with up to 2 GB of dual-channel DDR2 memory, ATI Mobility Radeon X600 graphics with 128 MB dedicated video memory and a fast PCI Express graphics bus.

Media buffs will want the optional notebook's Instant MyMedia kit, which offers quick access to TV, DVD and music CDs without booting up the notebook. Instant MyMedia also can pause live TV, record shows onto the hard drive or a DVD, and transfer existing VHS tapes to DVDs. A remote control is included.

For connectivity, the LifeBook N6200 notebook comes with built-in modem and high-speed Gigabit Ethernet, as well as the latest Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection, which supports all popular wireless standards.

Dedicated media slots for MemoryStick/SD and xD picture card allow users to transfer digital videos, pictures and music. The LifeBook N6200 notebook also includes media slots for ExpressCard and PCMCIA.

The N6200 also boasts dual hard drives with a combined 200 GB, handy for storing a lot of pictures and movies. A faster 60 GB (7200 rpm) hard drive option is also available.

The LifeBook N6200 notebook is available through the Fujitsu web site and channel partners starting at US $1800 for a base configuration. Users can choose from a recommended configuration or they can customize their system using the Fujitsu Configure To Order (CTO) program.
