New
software streams apps, media from PCs to Palm devices, in
real-time
- Gary Thayer, News Editor
Houston,
Jan. 25, 2005 -- (MobileVillage) -- Start-up company OnVerge
Labs today released its patent-pending application called
InfiniFile that lets Palm OS users access virtually unlimited
audio, video, programs and data stored on a PC. Rather than
having to download to the handheld device, InfiniFile streams
data in real-time from the server PC.
To other
Palm applications running on the handheld or smartphone, InfiniFile
simply looks like an additional multi-gigabyte memory card.
The amount of storage and the size of files accessible on
the device are limited only by the available space on the
server PC, says OnVerge.
Palm
OS device owners can use media player software with InfiniFile
to access any file from an audio or video library on a server
PC instantly. A user can simply "play" any song
or video from their server PC on their handheld or smartphone
in real time, without the need for downloads or synchronizing.
Games,
programs and databases can also be stored on the network,
preserving memory on the device. In the enterprise, InfiniFile
can provide a means of sharing spreadsheets, documents, presentations
and databases between multiple users.
InfiniFile
for Palm OS Platform retails for US $40 and is available for
purchase from the OnVerge web site. A free 14-day trial version
is available for download. The server program, InfiniServer,
is available free to install on any number of PCs at home
or in the office.
OnVerge
says it is donating 10% of sales proceeds for the first 60
days of release to Tsunami relief and reconstruction efforts.
