Google has just slashed the price of its unlocked Nexus 4 Android smartphone in seven countries to just $199 or $249 — a full $100 less than the $299 and $349 price. Google says that the price drop applies to the US, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Germany, Korea, and Australia.  Although the price cut differs in each of those countries, Google says the price drop is at least 25 percent off.

In the US, the 8GB Nexus 4 is now $199, and the 16GB Nexus 4 is now $249.  In the UK, the new prices are £159 and £199. These prices put the unlocked Nexus 4 on par with most locked smartphones bought on carrier contracts.

Of course, the price cut is a move to reduce inventory before more new smartphones are launched in September by competitors Apple, Samsung, Sony, and others.  Google will likely also launch the Nexus 5 this Fall, since the Nexus 4 was released last November.

Both unlocked LG-made Nexus models are available direct from Google Play.  If you already purchased a Nexus 4 in the last 15 days, Google Play’s “price protection” plan will refund you the difference.  If you are unsure if you qualify, check the Google Play Support link.
