For creating and storing PDFs on your Mac or PC you probably use Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Document Cloud (DC). But did you know that Adobe DC also includes mobile scanning and document signing apps? These are the digital signature capture app Adobe Sign, and Adobe Scan — a scanner app with free OCR and scan to PDF features.

Adobe Scan to PDF packs free OCR, cloud storage

Now in version 19 as of mid 2019, Adobe Scan has millions of downloads and excellent reviews on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. This scan to PDF app turns your phone or tablet into a smart scanning tool, making it easy to create digital documents.

To use Adobe Scan, just hold your device in camera mode over whatever you want to scan — forms, pictures, notes, receipts, business cards — even whiteboard discussions. Adobe’s scan to PDF technology automatically finds the edges of your document, then captures and cleans the image — transforming it into a clear PDF that you can edit. You can also re-name your scan, add a photo, reorder pages, crop, rotate or enhance it.

Free OCR for searching & editing

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in a scanner app is nothing new, but lots of other apps still require a subscription or paid upgrade for OCR features. Adobe Scan offers free OCR, converting printed text to digital text in seconds. After you’ve used the OCR feature, you can search, highlight, mark-up, comment on and share your PDF scan.

You can also use Adobe Scan to scan multi-page documents without sacrificing quality. While other free apps limit the number of pages you can scan or watermark the images, Adobe Scan is does not.

Each time you complete a scan, it’s stored in your Adobe Document Cloud (DC) account. There, you can search, edit and share your documents from both your desktop and mobile devices. Adobe DC is also integrated with Box, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive, so you can store and access your files with those services, too.

If you’re an Acrobat DC subscriber, you can do even more with Adobe Scan including edit and organize documents, collect signatures, and use Adobe Sign to digitally sign and send documents from any device.

Recent Adobe tech contributions

Adobe regularly conducts studies to better understand the needs of today’s mobile workers. For example, Adobe’s 2017 “Work in Progress” report found 81 percent of workers say access to state-of-the-art technology is most important to them at work, outranking even their office setting and amenities. Adobe also hosts Future of Work think tanks with thought leaders who discuss what our work future holds for us. You can watch many of those on Adobe’s YouTube channel below.

To keep up with the latest mobile trends and needs, Adobe also encourages tinkering among its engineers and developers by allowing them to work on a number of blue-sky innovations, such as a virtual reality PDF experience.

The company has also organized the Cloud Signature Consortium, a group of industry and academic organizations committed to an open standard for cloud-based digital signatures across mobile and web. This group aligns with the new European Union signature regulation (eIDAS) that aims to make digital signatures mainstream.
